Amedeo Modigliani. Johannes Vermeer. Paul Gauguin. Lasagna Alla Bolognese. Franz Kafka. Vincent Van Gogh.
No, these aren’t items you’d find on a menu card. Except maybe lasagna. The rest are, of course, artists. Artists who’ve created sensational work worth billions now. Artists who died broke, penniless and impoverished. Most in severe depression. Some of insanity. Some in prison. One cut his own ear off and another died of starvation while writing a book called “A Hunger Artist”.
Anyways, hi! I’m Calvin and I call myself an artist. I’ve been scribbling since I could hold a pencil without hurting myself. I dabble with anything I can get my hands on - pens, sketches, walls, paints, mice, keyboards, ipads and occasionally even the faces of a few unfortunate souls.
I dipped my toes into the world of a “professional” artist in 2019, starting with art challenges on Instagram - predominantly, inktober and 100daysofsketching. Over time, I spread out into cartoons and patterns and illustrations and comics.
I also set up shops online to see if people (like you!) would be interested in buying my art. To take a step towards becoming a full-time artist. To cautiously dip my toes in the dangerous waters that Van Gogh and Kafka once did, while managing my day-job that pays the bills. But now, I’ve decided to take the plunge. I’m diving straight in.
Am I swimming? Am I drowning? Is Godzilla real? Is there a shore in sight? Ships? Lifeboats? Floating pieces of wood? Will I meet Spongebob Squarepants? Only time will tell.
I call myself an artist. But the question is, when will the world call me that?
Van Gogh and Kakfa and Gauguin all died at least a few decades before the world acknowledged and celebrated them. Their ships or shores never arrived. But I have in my possession, something that Van Gogh and Kakfa and Gauguin didn’t.
I have the internet.
Limitless learning. Endless opportunities. Directionless distractions. A community to count on. This website is one such opportunity, and this blog marks the start of my journey. Will I make it to the other side?
Stick around and find out! Support me if you can.
